The Spirit & Power of Elijah - Message 7 - Baal-Zebub: Lord of the Flies. After the death of Ahab, at the beginning of 2 Kings, we find King Ahaziah depending upon Baal to determine whether he will recover from a serious injury. As his servants went to find the prophets of Baal, they instead were met by Elijah. The Lord sent Elijah with word about the kings fate, telling the kings men that Ahaziah will die. When they deliver this news to the king he demands that they find Elijah and bring the prophet to him. A captain with fifty men find Elijah and tell him to come with them, but they are consumed by fire from heaven. Another captain and his fifty men come to get him and they too are consumed by fire from heaven. Finally a third captain and his fifty come and beg for their lives before Elijah, and Elijah spares them and goes with them to the king. The question asked of Ahaziah is telling. "Is it because there is no God in Israel" that you have sent to inquire of Baal-Zebub? All of these mighty acts have verified for the people that Elijah is a prophet of the Lord. And his question strikes at the heart of idolatry. Too often we rely on everyone and everything else but God when we have a need. Too often we live as if there is no God. When we seek counsel from worldly friends, act with little regard for the Word of God, excuse or justify our "little" sins, or seek to find answers not based upon the truth of Holy Scripture we are in essence declaring that "there is no God in Israel" and so we must look elsewhere for answers. How can we live and demonstrate with our lives the truth that there is a God in Israel, and Jesus is His Name?
