We live in a culture today that has forgotten how to blush. What used to be shameful, has now become entertainment. What used to be unmentionable is casually discussed on television and social media. What used to be murder, is now called choice. What used to be an abomination is an alternative. People no longer read and hear and heed the word of God. Their opinions are more important. As in the days of the Judges, "there [is] no king in Israel; everyone does what [is] right in his own eyes.' (Judges 21:25) Have Christians lost their ability to blush too? The two great graces essential to a saint in this life are faith and repentance. These are the two wings by which he flies to heaven. Faith and repentance preserve the spiritual life as heat and moisture do the natural. Has the call to repentance been drowned out by the clamor of the crowd? It is the great duty of the Christians to solemnly repent and turn to God. Repentance is a foundational grace. The religion which is not built upon the foundation of repentance will fall. May our resolution be repentance. All year long. All life long. Every day. Strictly speaking, a person cannot repent when he chooses— repentance is a gift of God. The old Puritans used to pray for "the gift of tears." Despite Jesus himself preaching to Capernaum, it did not repent. Repentance refers to a change so profound that the direction of one's life is altered. In a Sunday school class one day, a little boy said that repentance was being sorry for your sins. But a little girl added that it was being sorry enough to quit. Amen.
