Aim: To be both crucified with and risen with Christ—as His church.
Doctrine: When sinners are pressed hard enough, sometimes they will turn to the Lord. Human beings can only take so much, and in one sense, the same is true of God.
Exegesis: How desperation can bless the church: it makes us see the seriousness of our sin (vv. 10-13); it makes us appreciate the exclusivity of our great God (vv. 14-15); it causes us to wonder at the grace of our loving Lord (v. 16).
Further application: How believers may minimize the need to be made desperate: by daily humbling ourselves before the Lord, and by dying daily to sin (and living in Christ).
Key verse: v. 15 ''And the children of Israel said to the LORD, 'We have sinned! Do to us whatever seems best to You; only deliver is this day, we pray.'''
