Doctrine: Often, God's people have to settle for less-than-ideal situations (in this world). Though our Christ Himself is pristinely perfect (in every way), God allows us to grow in Him (Jesus) through many imperfect agents.
Exegesis: How we end up with some of the provisions we have: desperation limits our options (10:17-18); sin (sometimes unfairly) taints our choices (11:1-6); necessity (sometimes) compromises our ideals (11:7-11).
Further application: How faithful Christians are to live with circumstances not thought to be optimal: by trusting in our good and sovereign God, and by contenting ourselves in Christ alone (and accepting that we ourselves are flawed).
Key verse: 11:6 ''Then they said to Jephthah, 'Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon.'''
