In the Christian liturgical calendar the advent season anticipates the celebration of Jesus' arrival. Advent means arrival. So for the next three Sundays we will study three psalms that help us celebrate Jesus' coming at just the right time for our salvation. Each of the psalms draws attention to a different facet of Jesus' salvation. Psalm 80 features Jesus the restorer, Psalm 97 Jesus the deliverer, and Psalm 130 Jesus the forgiver. Each of these psalms—and all the other psalms—were composed centuries before Jesus came into the flesh. They reveal God's people yearning for what only Jesus could give. And though we live after Jesus' first advent we continue to groan to be fully remade in the likeness of Jesus.
Psalm 80 is a plea for God to come and save (2) through "the son of man" (17). Israel had fallen from her former glory. She heeded to be restored. But this is always the story of humanity. We have fallen. We need to be restored.
