The spirituals of enslaved people in America had a common theme. They were songs "about a saving God, a redemptive God, a God who even in the fiery furnace can rescue you." Psalm 97 is like a song sung by slaves to keep alive their hope for deliverance (10). It is a reminder that there is a strong, just, and glorious God who will come to free his people and vanquish their adversaries (3).
Psalm 97 is a wonderful advent psalm because Jesus is the deliverer, a greater Moses who will set his people free. One of the clearest prophesies about Jesus says this, "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light … the rod of his oppressor, you have broken" (Is. 9:2, 4). To celebrate the advent of Jesus we need to appreciate the world's bondage and the hope that his coming brings.
