This portion of the Sermon on the Plain deals with the fact that all Jesus' followers will suffer persecution (Luke 6:22). Indeed, as Paul stated to Timothy, "All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution" (2 Tim. 3:12). True believers represent the Kingdom of God in a world controlled by Satan, who wants to establish his own kingdom. As per Rev. 12, since he cannot attack Jesus, he will make war on His followers. In the passage before us (Luke 6:27-49, Jesus informs His Apostles on how they are to respond to their persecutors. This instruction is for all who come after the Apostles, as well.
