Peter as we have previously noted knew at the writing of this letter that his time on earth was not long. Christ had revealed to Peter that his life would soon end. Before that, Peter would make sure that His readers and the church would have total assurance in the Word of God and in the sovereign reign of Christ. False teachers were sure to come seeking to lead His readers astray. And human nature affected by sin doubts and second-guesses. The false teachers especially questioned any notion of a coming judgment. But judgment was sure to come. As we noted last week, Peter gave assurance to his readers that these doubts should not trouble them. Things do not just go on and on without any change. The word of God created the heavens. Through water and the word, the earth was shaped and formed. Through water and the word, the world was destroyed when it was flooded by water. And the same word of God is keeping the present heavens and earth for a Day of Judgment and destruction of the ungodly. And here in verses 8-9, Peter continues his argument. Timing is not an issue for God. God's patience does not mean He is lazy or unable to get the job done in time. Therefore we must rest in the Lord's perfect timing. Rest in the Lord's perfect timing. We will look at verses 8-9 in two parts. First, Christ's timing is not our timing. Second, Christ's timing is for our good.
