An exposition of Eph 4.30
Outline: Introduction The God of the Bible is anything but an unmoved mover. “The Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Rom 8:26-27). 1. What does it mean to grieve the Holy Spirit of God? Definition: to cause sorrow, to sadden, to cause pain of heart, to hurt. See Mk 14:19, Jn 21:17.
2. Why would he be grieved by us? Romans 15:30. Spurgeon says: This “reveals to us the close connection between the Holy Spirit and the believer; he must take a very tender and affectionate interest in us, since he is grieved by our short-comings and our sins. He is not a God who reigns in solitary isolation, divided by a great gulf, but he, the blessed Spirit, comes into such near contact with us [and] feels such tender regards, that he can be grieved by our faults and follies…. “The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither ses Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1Cor 6:19). James 4:5, “Do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously?”
