Paul's doctrine of the Christian Life continued: Mortification, putting sin to death, is widely practiced among the godly, but VIVIFICATION, living unto God, is greatly neglected. Paul's gives the principle of exchange.
Introduction • “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Rom 6:4). • “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).
Review: Paul's exhortation: Be What You Are • What we were (v. 14-19) vs. What happened to us (v. 20-21). • “We are his workmanship” (Eph 2:10). • “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children” (Eph 5:1) • “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. [Therefore,] Walk as children of light” (Eph 5:8).
Exposition: Paul's Principle of living the Christian Life • It is the principle of exchange, out with the old, and in with the new. • Illustration of dead leaves clinging to a stick. • We need to put off AND PUT ON.
Applications of the principle 1. Exchange lying for truth (v. 25) 2. Exchange sinning in your anger for giving up your anger at the end of every day (v. 26-27) 3. Exchange stealing for giving to those in need (v. 28) 4. Exchange words of corruption for words of edification and grace (v. 29) 5. Exchange every other evil attitude and intent for good (31-32)
