This morning’s text makes it clear that along with the Jews and the Gentiles, there are two other categories of listeners that Paul is concerned about. Both groups are members of the church in Rome. Both groups are Christian. (Both groups still show up in almost every church!) Paul calls them the strong and the weak… The strong are strong in their understanding of how the faith (Gospel) influences their lifestyles. The weak are weaker in their grasp of how the Christian faith should affect daily living. The results might surprise you! When you put a bunch of Christians together in one room, what you ought to get is unity and mutual support and everyone growing in grace. But when you have a mix of strong and weak, what you might get is pride and condemnation and uneasiness! Because both groups think his group is more spiritual than the other group! Paul’s point in Romans 14 and 15 is that Christians must fully accept one another in matters of liberty and conscience. After all, Who are you to judge the servant of another? See that sermon title!?!: “I Wish You Were as Spiritual as Me!” Let’s look at how to preserve the peace when you think your brother isn’t as spiritual as you are!
