The issues that threatened the unity in Rome were more serious than the ones we’ve just laughed over together… More weighty than the length of the Apostle Paul’s beard….but last week’s text made it clear that these are still secondary issues compared to the core values of the Kingdom. The secondary issues were conscience issues. Is it acceptable to eat meat if you aren’t certain how it was prepared or where it was purchased. Same question with drink – was that jug of wine placed on the altar of Bacchus before being sold at discount in the market. Paul points out that it doesn’t matter; “I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself.” But in these issues your conscience is your ultimate umpire, so the apostle immediately continues: but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Paul says the really important consideration is our unity based on the core values of God’s Kingdom. Which means sometimes, even when you’re right, you have to give a little leeway to your weaker brother! This morning let’s examine how unity begins when you lay down your rights to pick up your cross!
