Our text from Matthew 3:13-17 is also essential for us in understanding the ministry of Christ. And as we have seen already several times in Matthew, there is a connection between the beginning of Matthew's story and the end of his story. During the last week of Jesus' ministry before His death, the chief priests and elders of the people confronted Jesus and questioned Him, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” Jesus responded appropriately by saying that if they answered His question then he would answer their question. Jesus asked them, “The baptism of John—where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And in asking this question, Jesus not only effectively silenced the chief priests and elders but He was also answering their question. His ministry and authority were related to the ministry of John the Baptist. He was the true successor of the John the Baptist, the last great prophet, the one who would complete the work that John would only begin. And in referring back to John's baptism, Jesus also called attention to His baptism by John, and to the three signs which followed His baptism, which showed where His authority was from. This morning we will look at Matthew 3:13-17 in three parts. 1. Verse 13: The Introduction 2. Verses 14-15: The Conversation of John and Jesus 3. Verses 16-17: Three Powerful Signs Since Jesus was baptized, think how significant is that you have been baptized, for we are baptized so that we might follow our Lord and Savior. There is for each one who has been baptized, a powerful connection to this story.
