I have commented before and we have all observed how much money is spent in our nation on entertainment, sports, and gambling. Billions and billions of dollars are spent at all different levels. Much of it is spent so that people can escape the reality of their empty and broken lives. I am guessing that all of you have gone through situations where something has happened that causes you to take the important things in your life much more seriously and to lose sight of the many trivial things that you sometimes think about. God gives you a wake-up call as it were. And almost instantly you take on a new and much more serious perspective of what is taking place. I think our nation is going through a similar process as God shakes the financial systems and idols that men place their trust in. And God does this as part of His grace to us and to advance His eternal purposes around the world. Nearly two thousand years ago, God sent to His people a prophet to awaken them, to call them to repentance, and to prepare them for the awesome coming of the LORD. Here in the first part of Matthew 3, we have a powerful reminder of the seriousness of the good news, the message of the gospel. God calls each of you again this morning to hear and live in terms of the good but awesome news that is found in Jesus Christ, the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. This morning we will look at Matthew 3:1-12 in two parts. 1. Verses 1-6: The Ministry of John the Baptist 2. Verses 7-12: The Message of John the Baptist We see in both the ministry and message of the John the Baptist the seriousness of the gospel message.
