After God spoke to Moses and told him that he would go to Pharaoh with the elders of Israel and that God would do signs and wonders that will cause Pharaoh to let them go, Moses asked the obvious question. What do I say when they don't believe me, so God give him three signs to show the elders of Israel. Moses cast his rod on the ground and it became a deadly serpent that Moses fled from until he did as God instructed and picked it up and it turned back into a rod. God told him to put his hand in his garment and it came out leprous. When he put it back in, the leprosy was gone. The third sign was taking water from the river and it being blood when it was poured out on dry land. When we think of Moses' ministry being the ministry of death (2 Corinthians 3:7), those signs make sense, a serpent, leprosy and blood being poured out. Turning the serpent back to a rod and healing the leprous hand, also showed that he had a healing ministry, but primarily his ministry was pointing to men being dead in their sins and trespasses. Compare that to the signs that accompanied the coming of the New Covenant, "the blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. (Matthew 11:5)" As we consider the testimony of the power of God demonstrated with the wonders, we should be thankful that we have received the ministry of the Spirit with its far greater miracles declaring life and healing.
