Our Unchanging Covenant God Jacob was able to very personally claim the Almighty God as His own. He was not only the God of Abraham and Isaac, He was the God of Jacob. When he pronounced blessings on the twelve tribes he was not only doing so as God’s spokesman, he was doing so with great confidence because He knew who God was and what He was like. It took him a long time to grasp that and trust in Him but here, at the close of his life, he reveals a deeper grasp of God and he passes that on to his offspring. It is to be a comfort to his sons and their families for generations to come. Jacob provides at least three descriptions of God that should provide great comfort for all who trust in Him. If they worship Him as their God they will have the great blessings of knowing Him, His Almighty power, His caring shepherding, and they will be firmly founded upon the Rock of their salvation. Does this describe the God you know and worship? God does not change, so it stands to reason that if you belong to Him it does. Parents, is this the God you teach your children about? He is your faithful covenant God. If you intend to bestow a true blessing on generations to come, point to Him as the One God of salvation and pray that your children and your children’s children will love, serve, worship and trust in Him alone through Jesus Christ the Lord. This text includes the blessing on Joseph (which included the tribe of Ephraim and the half tribe of Manasseh {misstated in the sermon} and Benjamin.
