Aim: To understand that the Lord Jesus Christ is perfecting His church in His grace.
Exegesis: Christ is cleansing His house of dead formalism. Our worship must flow from living (v. 15) reverent (v. 16) hearts. Christ is cleansing His house of blind ignorance. Let us know why we are here (v. 17a) and reject all substitutes (v. 17b). Christ is cleansing His house of stubborn unbelief. The wicked will die in their sins (v. 18a); the righteous will live because of Christ (vv. 18b-19).
Key verse: v. 17 ''Then [Jesus] taught, saying to them, 'Is it not written, ''My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations''? But you have made it a ''den of thieves.'''''
