The Reformed theologians & confessions indicate that the 8th commandment is very deep and broad. It is so deep and broad that in one sense every sin man commits breaks the 8th commandment.
-Philip Ryken explains, “Every violation of the Ten Commandments involves some form of theft. Bowing down to idols steals God’s worship. Desecrating the Sabbath, steals his holy day. Murder steals life; adultery steals purity; lying steals the truth. But the real theft is that every sin we commit dishonors God, and thus steals the glory that our lives ought to give him,” (pg. 651).
It is not an accident that Jesus died between two thieves when numbered with the transgressors. Those two thieves represent the whole of the human race. One believed into Christ and that day went to paradise. The other rejected Christ and that day went to Hell. But both were thieves and they represent us all for Adam robbed God of his honor when he rebelled in the Garden. If there is any commandment that shows us how much we need Jesus to save I would think it would be this one. But of course all 10 show us how much we need Jesus.
