In the third commandment we are warned not to take the name of God in vain. First we consider what is meant by the name of God and then why it is that God has a great regard for His own name. Then we will consider the various ways in which sinners break this commandment: 1. Through cursing; 2. Through deceitful oaths taken in God's name; 3. Through unintentional failures to keep vows made in God's name; 4. Through the casual borrowing of the name of God and/or Christ in empty professions of faith that are followed by scandalous behavior that brings reproach on God's name; 6. By churches that borrow the name of God or Christ and then do not abide by His Word. In all these ways, we treat the name of God with contempt and indicate that we think God is no one in particular to be loved, feared or regarded. We then consider the glory of the gospel and of regeneration, wherein God-dishonoring blasphemers are transformed into God-honoring saints who do all for the very name they once despised.
