John Calvin was 29 years old before he even began to consider marriage. Martin Bucer and his wife had been married for nineteen years when Calvin moved in with them. He saw in them a remarkable marriage. It was such a wonder marriage, that Calvin realized that he needed a wife. So Calvin picked a date a few after Easter 1539. Now, all Calvin had to do was find a wife. Calvin and Idelette made for a wonderful couple. They were married for 9 years before she succumbed to tuberculosis and died. She and Calvin had suffered many things together. There is but one type of true love in this world. And we see it played out in Calvin's life. He loved his wife deeply. But when the Lord removed her from him, Calvin's love did not recede. Instead his love for Jesus Christ increased. How much do you love Jesus? And if I asked you where I might see this love in action. to which relationship would you point? How we love others, reveals how we love Christ. The primary place where God has embedded an illustration of Christ's love toward this sinner is in marriage and specially in the husband's love to the wife.
