We are considering Colossians 3:20 this morning which is a list of rules for the household. The purpose of these rules was the well-being of the household. They clearly spelled out what was required and expected of members in the house. Obedience was a critical ingredient to a good family. In fact, without obedience, a family almost ceases to be a family. The family works better when everyone is pulling their weight, doing their part. So we see the importance of this because Scripture makes it a foundational principle for the family. Children are a gift from God, are they not? We typically see the blessing of children in the joy that they bring. We love seeing our children accomplish something special. It brings us joy. But the blessing of children isn't merely in the joy they bring us. How children treat their parents is a picture, for better or for worse, of how we treat our heavenly Father. Paul continues to address the Christian family and the relationships within it. But at the same time, there is an underlying parallel to the Spiritual family and our relationship to our heavenly Father. I have in your bulletins three questions: 1) Why does God command obedience? 2) Why is obedience commanded "in everything?", and 3) Why does obedience please God?
