How are we to think of technology? Is an innovation of God? Is it of the world? Is technology good? Or is it evil? The Bible tells us to "test everything." Hold fast to that which is good and abstain from every form of evil. New forms of evil are constantly being hatched by the devil and his demons. He is constantly moving the line to where it should not be. We must think critically. We must think Christianly. About everything! Thinking critically and Christianly is a careful process of principled evaluation. It is not a mere off the cuff opinion. Such opinions are usually just rationalizations to get what we want. The cultural mandate assures us that much technology can be received as good and as a manifestation of God's common grace. We can live longer and healthier lives today. And quite importantly, roads, boats, printing presses and the Internet have facilitated the spread of the gospel over the whole earth. The printing press was a great boon to Luther and the Reformation! It was innovation that brought the paralyzed man to Jesus. Your church is involved in the same endeavor. Through technology, we are going out into the world to bring people to Jesus. So is technology good or evil? The answer is yes. It is both good and evil. We must be very wise in how we use it and we must not let it use us.
