The big idea in Hebrews 7, and one of the most important truths in Hebrews, is that Jesus is the best, the last, the only high priest anyone will ever need. To set the context, verses 11-19 offered two reasons why Jesus has replaced the entire Levitical priesthood of the OT and why that’s good and necessary. First, Jesus is a completely new, different, and better High Priest. He isn’t even descended from the Tribe of Levi! In fact, Jesus’ priesthood was previewed by mysterious Melchizedek, an ancient priest who wasn’t even Jewish! Second, only Jesus can offer you perfection! By “perfection” (vv.18&19) the writer of Hebrews is thinking of “drawing near to God” – perfection is the security of a reconciled relationship with your Heavenly Father. The OT priests and sacrifices and laws could picture perfection but they couldn’t provide perfection. “Drawing near” is only possible thru the hope offered by Jesus’ gospel! But our author isn’t finished examining Jesus’ priesthood; in fact he’s just warming up! So now let's unpack… Three more reasons why Jesus is the only high priest you’ll ever need: i.) Jesus’ priesthood was established with God’s oath (vv.20-22). ii.) Jesus’ heavenly intercessions save sinners utterly (vv.23-25). iii.) Jesus’ holiness makes Him a spotless sacrifice and perfect priest (vv.26-28).
