Aim: To act on indwelling grace—through faith and repentance.
Doctrine: Because of saving grace, believers are able to rebuff Satan and embrace God. This calls for intentional repentance, that addresses both the Lord and the devil.
Exegesis: How the church successfully resists and draws near: first, by humbly acceding to all of God's ways (v. 7a); then, by consciously rejecting all of Satan's enticements (v. 7b); finally, by boldly bonding to God (through faith in Jesus' atonement) (v. 8a).
Further application: Why both resisting and drawing near are necessary Christian duties: because otherwise we would deceive ourselves with a false hope, and since the true gospel requires faith and resultant repentance.
Key verses: vv. 7-8a ''Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.''
