Aim: To break with sin; and bond with Christ—as His redeemed church.
Doctrine: The gospel forces Christians to take sides; Christ, or the world. This dynamic is not only in regard to our justification, but it also continues throughout our sanctification process (as well).
Exegesis: How the Holy Spirit moves true believers to take the right side: He starts by reproving our obsession with our flesh (v. 4); He then elicits our repentance—grounded in His indwelling power (v. 5); finally, He refreshes us with abundant renewing grace (v. 6).
Further application: Why taking sides is a key part of the church's ministry on the earth: because it prunes us off from the clinging world, and it reunites us (experientially) to our blessed Redeemer.
Key verse: v. 5 ''Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, 'The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously'?''
