For the local area Walthamstow is the church on the Association's Prayer Diary for the coming week. The church correspondent writes: 'Praise that the monthly Saturday coffee mornings help to keep good relationships with our neighbouring retirement flats. Pray that more from elsewhere will join us.' Additional news. 'A new Tamil project based in our buildings has affected numbers at our Sunday morning services. Although we have some younger people inour congregations, our membership's average age approaches 60 and we have no regular children's work. May the Lord guide and empower us to build for the future!'
For the wider area Grace to Russia - Michael Phillips, Grace Baptist Church, Fremont, California Grace to Russia exists to get good Christian books to pastors and teachers in the former Soviet Union. The books, however, are not sent to fill their shelves, but to support their ministries of the Word. In the last month fifty letters have arrived thanking us for our books. Below we have a few excerpts from the letters.
Thank you very much for The Golden Alphabet. I am 35 years old and pastor of the Evangelical Reformed Church in St. Petersburg. Your books help me in the ministry. I study J.C. Ryle's commentaries on the Gospels for my sermons. Sometimes I quote Ryle and C.H. Spurgeon who help me stand firm in the Reformed Faith...We send some of your books to a church in Rostovsky, Russia, who need them badly. --Pastor Fokin Maxim, St. Petersburg, Russia
I like Ryle's Expository Thoughts very much. I often use them in sermon preparation. They help us to understand the right interpretation better. --Pastor Shilnikov Sergei, Labytnangi, Russia
I use your books for sermon preparation and also give them to church members to read. The book by J.I. Packer, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, is very thought provoking. In the past I was a convinced Arminian, but now I believe in God's election and man's responsibility. --Pastor Maximov Sergei, Kursk, Russia
In our church we have Bible studies on Wednesday and Friday, and almost always use Ryle's commentaries. We have now reached his Expository Thoughts on the Gospel of Luke. --Koblev Valid, Psebe, Russia
We thank the Lord for the privilege of helping these brethren on the other side of the world. And we thank you for the support and encouragement you've given us in helping them. Keep the dear Russian pastors and Grace to Russia in your prayers.
Filipino pastors commit to cross-cultural missions More than one-thousand Christian leaders attended Global Advance's latest Frontline Shepherd's conference in Davao, Philippines. Evangelism is challenging because of a growing Islamic presence, isolated tribal groups and lack of pastoral training. It's been estimated that 92-percent of all the pastors in the developing world have no formal Bible education." There's another important reason the training is needed. "Approximately 10-percent of the Philippine population works abroad in some other nation in some other capacity. So, that really puts them in a unique situation to really spread the Gospel in places they wouldn't normally go.".
