17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
It is such a common thing in the world today; the denial of truth and embracing of pure fantasy, all the while demanding that everyone else support your delusion, and pretend that the lie is reality. It is the very substance of woke ideology, but has no place in the church of Jesus Christ. We are followers of the One who IS the truth, and lies are not a part of who we are. Not now, not ever. It is a radical case of the emperor's new clothes, one that has overtaken an entire culture. And many wonder what can be done to arrest the slide into oblivion. Unfortunately, if all we have is the tools of the world, it is a hopeless scenario. But God has never been One to tell us to fix our own problems. He has provided us with the tools of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And in the light of His magnificent grace, we understand the truth that the madness is just sin. While this might seem a bit pessimistic, the good news of the gospel is that in Christ, God has provided a cure for sin. He has paid the penalty for our rebellion in the death of Jesus Christ. In Romans 3.24-25 we are told that we "have been justified by His grace" and that God set Jesus "forth as a propitiation". He has paid the price and He has made sure that, for those who are found in Christ, we are made whole, that we are forgiven and that we are adopted into the family of God. We are told that God offers us everything that is needed to restore the terrible price of our life of rebellion. We are promised that He will provide clothing; assured that He will provide all the spiritual wealth we could ever need; and reminded that He offers us the salve which will cure our willful blindness. Into the chaos of our imaginary lives God inserts the truth of all creation. We are indeed naked, poor and blind, and all of our pretenses will do nothing to change it. All of our efforts, all of our wisdom... in the end all they do is show us as we are, and while we prance about showing our ruin and pretending it is victory, the enemy of our souls laughs us into hell. But for every one who calls upon the name of the Lord, there is the promise of forgiveness, of restoration, of healing, of wholeness. Do not run after the fractured imagination of the mad prince of the air; instead find the whole truth of God's love and provision in the person of Jesus Christ.
