“Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.” vs11
The Lord Jesus has given us proof that He is from the Father: The miracles, the fulfillment of Scripture, and His resurrection from the dead. His words proved His holiness and His wisdom. He is a just God and a Savior [Isa 45:21].
Believe on Him because of the evidence given! This is not a small matter. He saves from the wrath to come. He reveals our election - that as we trust in Him, we know that we have been loved instead of hated: we know that we have the inheritance. Romans 9:13, "As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau." He is the most precious thing between the eternities - the One who spares us and brings us to heaven. Trust His blood and His great sacrifice. Trust Him and live forever.
Secondly, He’s not talking about us doing miracles. Vs13-14
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.“
The miracle of the new birth is ours! He uses us to save sinners, but we are not opening literal eyes and raising literal sinners from the dead [Mark 16:17-18]. We are overcoming Satan, but we’re not drinking literal poison and handling literal snakes. Luke 10:19, "Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you."
Read the Bible with SPIRITUAL EYES, and understand the message. Don’t be deceived by lying signs and wonders. We have the finished word of God, and it is the only safety. Step out of this hedge, and you will be bitten. Ecclesiastes 10:8, "The one who digs a pit may fall into it, and the one who breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake."
He’s telling us that the church of Jesus Christ, begun by the Apostles, will save many millions of souls, compared to the few hundred who saw Him after the resurrection. We’ll take the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth. Religious men are deceived by miracles, money (worldliness,) and self-righteous dead works. None of these has anything to do with the gospel. Grace will compel us to live godly - to lay down our lives to expand the gospel. Grace will make us serve in holiness, righteousness, and joy. Grace will make our fruit last. Saints, look for God to use you in saving sinners: this is the life ambition that He promises to bless.
John 14:14, "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it."
Jesus is not saying that if we ask for a Rolls Royce, ask to fly with our arms, or ask to leap over a tall building, then He will do it. He’s not saying that we’ll never grow old, never have hardship, and never taste physical death. He’s not saying a thousand things that this text is twisted to mean. He’s saying that if we ask anything ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, then He hears us, and this is the confidence of our asking!
1 John 5:14-15, “Now this is the confidence we have before Him: Whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears whatever we ask, we know that we have what we have asked Him for.”
Go before God utterly bold and get what He’s giving. Do not leave in doubt, but press through and obtain the promises. Admit where you are weak, and ask Him to strengthen you. Keep going, until you are sure it is yours. Holiness is yours and so is communion with God. Peace is yours, and so is soul-saving power. He will use us to save others. Let us get more concern, zeal, and boldness. Let us get faith and love.
