“I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” vs34-35
The evidence we are true disciples is that we love one another. It's not what we say, as much as what we do. It's sound doctrine with a sound life. Many do not like this combination. They prefer talk that is cheap. True disciples, however, show themselves by tangible love. 1 John 3:17, “But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?” We identify with the saints in sound doctrine, and we serve them in self sacrifice. We bear patient and forgive [Gal 6:1-2]. We are all about the gospel, which shows up in a gospel life. We want to encourage and see one another uplifted. Pride has been humbled, so we value others. We stick to each other as family.
Is this true of you? Are you about the gospel with your lip or also with your life? CH Spurgeon, said,
"Much as I love the creed of Christendom, I am ready to say that true Christianity is far more a life than a creed. It is a creed, and it has its ceremonies, but it is mainly a life; it is a divine spark of heaven's own flame which falls into the human bosom and burns within, consuming much that lies hidden in the soul, and then at last, as a heavenly life, flaming forth, so as to be seen and felt by those around."
We love people because we’re loved, and we receive the Lord's commandment.
Secondly, even after Peter denies Christ, He loves him. John 13:36-14:1
Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me."
Don't let anything or anyone turn you from God's love in Christ. We're always accepted by the work He has done, and He's loved us freely. It's not because of our merit or works. He laid down His life for us, and we have the inheritance because of grace. He chose us, not because we were better than others, or we loved Him, but because of His own purpose of grace, which was given to us in Christ before time began [2 Tim 1:9].
He loves us freely, and He loves everyone who has faith. This is a WONDERFUL BLESSING - to believe that you are loved, and have it to be true. Matthew 9:28-29, When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”
Thirdly, the beautiful revelation of God the Father is in Christ. vs7
“If you know Me, you will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
Christ is all that the Father is in love, mercy, and kindness. He's the Father in forgiveness, justice, and holiness. He is the complete revelation of the Father, and we are complete in Him [Col 2:10]. We lack nothing, and as we worship God in Christ, He is satisfied. Don’t let anyone steal you away with other wisdom, so called. Jesus Christ is all that we need to know, as we study holiness, righteousness, and redemption. He is the wisdom of God.
This is the inheritance of the saints, and all who believe HAVE IT in full. We've been predestined for this, and He works all things to give it to us. Ephesians 1:11, “We have also received an inheritance in Him, predestined according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will.” His love is unique and saving. This is not the love He had for Judas; it's the special love upon every Peter.
Finally, believe this love is upon you, and imitate our Lord Jesus. Love, as He loves you!
