“Coffee with Christ”

(Jeremiah 29:10-11)
“10. For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. 11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

The People of Judah had been sent into captivity by God to Babylon for their sin. God tells them they are going to be in captivity for seventy years. He then tells them that after seventy years He would visit them and return them to their home. Verse eleven says “I know the thoughts I think toward “YOU” thoughts of peace, and not of evil.” Who is He talking about. Does that “you” include us today as Christians? I don’t think so. It is not a personal prophesy even to the individuals listening to Jeremiah as he spoke these words. It was to the Nation of Judah. Many of the individuals listening to him died in Babylon during the seventy years of punishment for sin. Even Peter and Paul could not claim this verse for themselves. Peter was crucified upside down and Paul was beheaded. Not really the end they were hoping for. Christ told Ananias concerning Paul, “For I will shew him how great things he must “suffer” for my name's sake. (Acts 9:16)”. If we are going to claim verse 11 in the text above why not also claim verse 10? Seventy years of captivity in Babylon! It would only be good exegesis. The promises of God to His people in the Old Testament and not promises to the Church of today. Don’t cross thread the Old Dispensation with the New. You will stay confused about why God doesn’t do what you were counting on Him doing. Here is a promise you can count on!

(Romans 8:28)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.)
