(1 Corinthians 9:27) “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
The first sentence of this verse is thought provoking. You pull the meaning of it out by doing away with the unnecessary words and you have this, “I Bring My Body Under Subjection”. Is not my body me? Paul is speaking of his body as though it were more like a possession of his rather than he himself. He speaks in the second person concerning his body calling his body “IT” rather than “myself”! Why? Because I am not my body and my body is not me! It is a possession given to me by God to interact with the world around me. It is my vehicle to be used for the Glory of God! It is a vessel. He is saying how can I teach others how to drive their car if I myself have crashed and burned? The person on the inside of the vehicle is the real you! That is your soul! The human spirit. Mind, will and emotions. But how does my mind, will and emotions bring my body under subjection? We do it by submitting our mind, will and emotions to the Holy Sprit. The Bible teaches that there are parts of the body that no man can control or tame. The tongue for example! James says if you are able to control the tongue you are able to control the whole body but that no man can do it! There must be another passenger in control of our minds, our wills and our emotions if we are ever going to be able to bring our bodies under subjection to the Lordship of Christ! That passenger is The Holy Spirit of God.
(Romans 8:9-14) “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
