Deuteronomy 4:9–10 (NKJV): Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, 10 especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’

Two main ideas, remember the things God has said, and teach them to the next generations. Simple, succinct, plain, perfect... and so very often, ignored. The first is ignored because we allow the things of this world that crowd into our minds and lives to distract us from truth, and the second grows from the first... how do we allow the world in? We cease being diligent regarding our hearts. God commands us to keep ourselves diligently, to "take heed" to ourselves. This simplest of directives is subtly difficult. We so often fall victim to the snare of encroaching busyness, to the confusion of the moment with its demands upon our attention and upon our affection. It creeps up on us, quietly pressing the merely urgent, or worse, simply amusing, to distract us from the important and weighty matters of eternal thoughts. We confuse our things with God's things, and our souls suffer for the long starvation that follows... but the secondary and far more insidious result comes much later. As our souls are starved and we seek to sustain ourselves on the merely physical and the hollow memory of once knowing something about God, we falter and fade when it comes to teaching the next generations... even if we try, they sense the falsehood of what we say we believe, for they can SEE the truth of what we really do. We can teach them of finance, of business, of politics and social concerns... but when it comes to truth, we are bankrupt and find we cannot teach what we no longer possess... I beseech you by the cross of Christ, set yourself to guard your heart; learn the things of God with all you are, then teach your children what you know, what you live, what you love!!
