How do we appease the wrath of God? how do we make payment for our sin? How can I, a man and nothing more, satisfy the doom that is hung over my head? These are all manifestations of the same wrong question, and yet, in one form or another, it is the question so often formed, and so falsely answered. Religions of all sorts, of all manner, of all creeds, but ALL of the imagination of man have offered a thousand and one ways to satisfy the anger of God. At the root of all lies the same answer, you make your payment, you offer sacrifice, you make your offering... the answers are as varied as the false religions from which they spring. But they always come back to the same false thing - DO this, DO that, you can earn His favor by DOING. Nothing could be further from the truth. The scripture says plainly God does not delight in sacrifice or burnt offerings, God does not want the empty frail works of our imaginary righteousness. He cannot be appeased by such weak things. Only the blood of the Righteous One, only the Lamb of God, only Jesus Christ is worthy and able to satisfy the wrath of God. And He has done so!! So what does God require of us then? A broken and contrite heart. A heart that sees our sin as He does, as vile and hateful ruin, a heart that mourns for all the wrong which we have committed, and which seeks shelter in the mercy flowing from the cross. What He delights in, is us, changed by His grace, and conformed to the likeness of Jesus. Oh beloved, run to the cross, and find mercy there to cover all your sin!!!
