Galatians 3:13–14 (NKJV): 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
What was the curse of the law from which Christ redeemed us? It was death; eternal, spiritual and hopeless. It was the unending, terrible and righteous wrath of the Holy God of the Universe. That death was promised in the garden, and the beginnings of that death were delivered there. It is the doom of all mankind that we are born under the awful judgment which our first parents gave us as our inheritance. It is inescapable, it is ruinous and it is evident in every single aspect of our culture, and what is more, it is the evil core of every natural human heart. We are all born hating God, and the holy and perfect law of God judges and condemns us for this. His law demands payment in blood. It's curse hangs over the head of every man, woman and child who ever walked the earth… but that is not the end of the story for us. In taking the death of crucifixion for us, in bearing our sins upon the cross, Jesus endured the full, crushing force of that curse, indeed BECAME a curse for us, that curse earned by us and utterly undeserved by Him!. He emptied death of its power over all who shelter under the cover of His blood. No longer do we stand cursed but have instead escaped from that heritage… we have been redeemed out of the hand of the destroyer and delivered into the hand of the beloved Savior. There is no other who can do this, and no other religion promises it… There are many who will lie to us about our "divinity" our "essential goodness"; many who will tell us of our "hidden inner power"; many who will blind us to truth and lead us captive to hell. But It is the truth of scripture alone that shows us in our utter depravity; and yet clearly holds up the Son, who is the only one who can turn ruined, foolish men into righteous sons of the Most High God… It is God alone Who through the scripture promises us the person of the Spirit dwelling inside us to make us His own precious possession. It is the Word of God alone that speaks truth into our darkness, showing us what we truly are and still leading out into the light of God's forgiving and redeeming love. Rejoice! O captive… your deliverer is here with the power of Truth to set you free!!!
