Here is the opening of Daniel's prayer on behalf of Israel. It runs for 15 verses, and in that time Daniel identifies himself with Israel 30 times, "our sin, we did not heed, we rebelled". Daniel, who was arguably the most righteous man of his entire generation, probably the most righteous man alive on the planet at that time, and He prays for the sins of rebellious Israel as if they were his own sins!! Interceding on behalf of a people who wanted deliverance but did not want repentance, his prayer was one that shakes me to my core... how often am I reluctant to repent for my own sin, loathe to confess my own rebellion, scared of crying out for mercy yet again. But here we see a man pushing, pleading, praying for God's mercy and pulling no punches about owning that sin as his own hatred of God. And his prayer bases his pleas to God upon this ground. "YOUR GLORY, oh God, is at risk. Deliver us for the sake of your fame and the glory of your name." Let this plea be the cry of our heart and let us all stand in the gap for our fallen nation. We may feel that the sin is not ours, which in truth, pridefully makes them even more our own. Let us repent together as the children of God, on behalf of the lost who surround us.
