I have posted at length that I believe the issue which the Lord Jesus Christ Himself sees as most confronting the Church today is DECEPTION

In thinking a bit deeper

The ANTIDOTE for Deception is found in: Giving more earnest heed to the things we have heard (that which God Himself tells us in Scripture), lest we drift away.

This will wonderfully affect us in having a genuine fear of the LORD, to treat Him as Holy, to not be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ - to fervently pray in faith in agreement with the will of God (not mere wishful thinking) - AND to be about the Great Commission

And of course so very much more that has to do with being a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.

If the church would stick to the hymn book written and approved by GOD Himself then this seed would not have grown into the liberal human effort which we see today.
GOD's Hymnbook is in the Bible and is called the Book of Psalms.
Do YOU believe the Bible? or do you too want to rewrite it?
You sectarians should get some biblical knowledge and perspective. Nowhere in the Bible are we ever told that the Psalms are to the Church's sole song book for worship, and if you really want to be silly about this, then The Song of Songs, being the superlative Song should have the eminent place in worship! When was the last time you sang this in worship?

You may feel justified in never taking the name of the Savior on your lips when engaged in worship, but there are many "Christians" who would feel undone to be denied that name in Christian songs.

Whatever sympathy I may have had with the Psalms only movement has turned to deep suspicion that this is movement is born of the Devil to further divide the churches from the main issues to hand!

My dear old thing

Thanks awfully for giving me the opportunity to hear some psalm singing. When the web has calmed down a bit I'll have a listen.

Now as to the other point.

You're not Mr Badman are you? I mean, I know God is inherently good, and we by nature are inherently bad; but surely you are converted to Christ and are indwelt by his Spirit, producing the good fruit of the Spirit, evidenced in a holy life, complete with good works, which God foreordained that you should walk in them?

No!
Just this one Book of the Word of God - the Book of Psalms - you remove from worship that you may change and use the theological ideology of sinners.
Oh well Mike, I pray that God will excuse you and the other objectors to His Word.
Thank you. May He grant you the understanding that praises are personal. Perhaps He would like to hear your heart? He has heard David's. Who, by the way, was also a sinner who wrote and sang songs.

Oh what piffle. Here's one of those sinful slippery slope seeds:

"Praise ye the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, Brothers and sisters, draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration!

Praise ye the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen How thy desires e'er have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

Praise ye the Lord, who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee!
Decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed thee;
How oft in grief Hath not He brought thee relief,
Spreading His wings for to shade thee!

Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
Let the Amen Sound from His people again:
Gladly for aye we adore Him."

Amen.

CHS says a lot in short space
After posting that link, I did some research online. I found that "FEEDING SHEEP OR AMUSING GOATS" was NOT authored by CHS! Someone had taken extracts and snippets from: "]]The Devil's Mission of Amusement" (by Archibald Brown -- a student & contemporary of CHS), added to it here and there, then ATTRIBUTED it to CHS! It's ALL over the net, quoted by everyone as being a CHS writing. Unfortunately, it's not.
I was taken in and should have researched it BEFORE I posted it! But it's still good stuff.

A little more about 2 Cor 12:16 and Paul "using GUILE"

The KJV, the NASB, & the NIV translations do NOT make the verse clear. Surprisingly, better translations come from ...

"But granting that I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, YOU SAY, and got the better of you by deceit." (ESV)

"But granting that I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, YOU SAY, and got the better of you by guile." (RSV)

"Some of you admit I was not a burden to you. But THEY STILL THINK I was sneaky and took advantage of you by trickery." (NLT)

Check out Matthew Henry and a few other commentaries!

Paul wrote:

I guess guile would fall into the category of fooling. Perhaps it's ok, as long as not accompanied by amusement?

IF you are reading 2 Cor 12:16 to mean that Paul is saying that guile is OKAY, (i.e., even HE resorted to using it for the sake of the Gospel), then you're reading the verse TOTALLY WRONG! The SENSE of the verse is 180° OPPOSITE to what you have made it out to mean!

This passage is SO FAR from being friendly to the exercise of guile, that it is a manifest disavowal of it. IT IS AN IRONY. The Apostle does not describe what had ACTUALLY been his conduct, but that of which he STOOD ACCUSED by the Corinthian teachers! They insinuated, that he was a sly, crafty man, going about preaching, persuading, and catching people with guile. Paul acknowledges that he and his colleagues did indeed ‘persuade men,’ and could not do otherwise, for ‘the love of Christ constrained them.’ (2Cor 5:11,14) But he indignantly repels the insinuation of its being from mercenary motives. ‘We have wronged no man,’ says he, ‘we have corrupted no man; we have defrauded no man.’ (2Cor 7:2) Having denied the charge, he shows the ABSURDITY of it!

Also DJC49 how about 'entertainment' to occupy and amuse the sheep and heartily recommended from even the calvinist pulpit?

The theatre or movie house or now the combined in the home..the huge plasma screen TV.

An example of two great preachers:

'A very serious matter concerns the amusements engaged in by professing Christians. I see it publicly stated, by some who call themselves Christians, that it is good for Christians to attend the theatre, so that the tone and character of the productions may be improved. The suggestion is about as sensible as if we were bidden to pour a bottle of lavender water into the main sewer to improve its aroma.'

'Such has been the moral condition of the theatre for many a year that it has become too bad for mending'
'It has not been my lot ever to enter a theatre during the performance of a play'

'If theatre-going became general among professing Christians, it would be the death of piety. Yet one finds the taste for such things increasing on every hand.'

Don't you find it amazing that Spurgeon wrote this way back in the 1800's?

(And you thought the "6 Flags Over Jesus" phenomenon was something of only recent vintage, right?)

BTW, ... The last 2 sentences of his short article reads:
"The need of the hour for today's ministry is believing scholarship joined with earnest spirituality, the one springing from the other as fruit from the root. THE NEED IS BIBLICAL DOCTRINE, SO UNDERSTOOD AND FELT, that it sets men on fire."

If I had to go by what was written on that webpage, then it seems that I can not read Acts 2:5 in a strict, literal sense. So perhaps "Neil" was correct in that the phrase in Acts 2:5 ("every nation under heaven") does not mean literally every nation under heaven.

Not so!
The point illustrated by the "travel" of the ancient Jews is that they did roam the world. This being so it is only assumptions which we can derive from the limited historic information of the times. By the same token that you have chosen to not perceive "every nation" represented - it is equally possible to ascribe "all nations" as being represented. Mortals just don't know who precisely the LORD led to be there on that day. Thus by faith we believe what GOD wrote! The Bible is inerrant!

On the other hand Jesus did say this for a reason.....
Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

So we can assume that "missionary" zeal was alive and travelling way back in those times.
