I rarely leave a tip. I don't make a lot of money. Also, I worked at McDonalds before. I never got tipped while preparing someone's food for them and I feel the same way with any Restaurant. It's gotten to the point where it's expected and not earned. If someone does a great job, above and beyond what they are supposed to do, and I happen to have some cash, I might leave a tip. I do what I want with my money and if someone wants to tip with "their" money, they can go for it. But don't look down on me because I don't.

The whole issue of tipping used to really irk me because I thought the employer should pay their waitstaff a decent wage. After all, I pay a high price for a meal and now I have to pay their waitstaff too. However, I finally decided that tipping is the way it is, and I wasn't going to change things. Also, I usually read my Bible while I eat. And so that I may not be a reason to cause an offense to the name of Christ, I leave at least 15 percent if not more. Tipping this way has helped me to be more grateful for the things that I have and to be less greedy.

So, Yamil, which do you leave? The Jack Chick Halloween tract or the My Granddaddy's a Gorilla tract?

Why should I tip? A tip is supposed to be a reward for going above and beyond the call of duty. When my food is brought to me in good condition and my drink is kept full, the server has done his/her job. When I pay for my food, I have done my job. Why does the server deserve something extra? Did he/she rub my feet? The compensation the server receives is a matter between the emplyee and the employer and no other. It is not my fault that the employer refuses to pay an ethical wage. It is not my responsibility to suffer his operating costs with an extra tax.

The fact that is not widely advertised is that servers are entitled to the state's minimum wage. That's the same minimum wage as the guy in the back washing dishes or the guy in the kitchen makes. Yes, employers are permitted to pay wait staff less at first. However, if the tips and the lower hourly wage don't average to equal the state minimum wage, the employer is required to make up the difference.

Here is something to think about. You go to two different restaurants. Restaurant one the bill is $10 and you leave a $1.50 tip. Restaurant two the bill is $25 and you leave a $3.75 tip. Both servers do the same amount of work, the only difference is the price of the meal. Is this fair to pay the server at restaurant #2, 2 ½ times more?

Yes I'm glad we live in Australia with no tipping. The staff is paid very well for the job they do. In the US we've found that a tip is mandatory and actually stipulated on the bill in the better restaurants.

At the Chinese Restaurant that I go to that has a Mongolian Stir Fry there is a jar on the counter to put money in for the chef who does the stir frying. I never put money in the jar because the chef is being adequatly remunerated financially by the restaurant for services rendered.

I figure with their tip they can go to a Christian bookstore and buy their own tracks and at least have a choice between the little dollar bills and Jack Chick's. Give a man a fish... as the saying goes.

Tipping basically says, "Young Man, with this dollar bill you too can build an empire like the wealthy businessmen before you who started with as much in their pockets." The tip is a symbol of economic prosperity.

American businesses should pay their employees a fair wage so the silly tipping system can be dropped. It is unheard of here thankfully. When I visit the US I get confused as it is not clear what you are expected to do. Leaving a tract also is a great idea Gabriela!

I've always heard that you don't leave tips in family owned restaurants, and most Chinese restaurants are family owned. But I do anyway. And I figure they split the tips with everyone there. I've never even heard of tipping a chef at any restaurant.

I only give a tip of 10 percent of the total restaurant bill. 10 percent tip is good enough to give. But when I go to a Chinese Restaurant and they have a Mongolian Stir Fry I do not give any tip to the chef because the chef is being adequatly remunerated financially by the restaurant for services rendered.

We try to leave at least 15% tip for any meal out, but we tip pretty high with good service. I've left $5 bills for bills that came to $18.00 - $20.00, just because the place was crazy and the waitress was so sweet and attentive. Like Laura said, those folks work hard, and we want them to know that we appreciate their work.

It makes me mad that you're not supposed to tip union grocery store clerks for packing up your car. I always slip a nice young kid a couple of bucks or so anyway. They performed a service and I want to show my appreciation, and the unions can pack sand.

We have a family of 9 and always leave a tract with the tip. And as we are such a large family, and dress modestly, people always remember us, so we try and be a good testimony. An added benefit, on return visits, the waitresses are usually extremely helpful. They have a hard job, have to deal with cranky people, try to be a bit of a blessing to them. You never know, maybe they will come out to church (and get saved!!) because you were so kind!

A tip of 15% would be considered insane in my country. Usually you would leave anything between 5 to 10% at the most. Moreover you only leave tips when the food was good and the waiter and waitress treated you nicely. Ohterwise you would leave without giving them anything!
