AM, I had no purpose for the yoga link but FYI. I'll let Cheryl decide for herself what to do w/ it. Sorry to disappoint you, but I had no ulterior motives.

Neil,
why should i ?

What was the purpose of your link ? To make Cheryl feel o.k. about her attendance of a Yoga class,or to try to shew her the error of her ways ?

Be open and honest Neil.

AM, that analogous question presupposes agreement about the validity of alcohol consumption or the propriety of doing so in public. Try a different tack.

Here's a good analysis of yoga by an E. Indian Christian scholar:

In agreeing with me, Cheryl, I think you've misunderstood.

I wasn't saying that the verse recommends we should put spiritual things before physical fitness. If you look more closely at my post, you'll hopefully see that I believe that the 'bodily exercise' phrase has nothing to do with keeping fit, but instead refers to religious ritual.

Cheryl,
suit yourself then Cheryl,but remember,

1) Abstain from all appearnce of evil 1 Thess.5:22

2) Make sure that you are not a stumbling block to a weak beleiver who would see what you do and think it is quite o.k. for Christians to be and do as the world does.

I appreciate though what you say about your physical problems, just be careful.

To your own master you stand or fall !

MSC:

LOVE the sauna!

Neil:

I walk as much as possible, but have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which require flexibility and toning exercise. Yoga reduces my pain and the tension in my muscles more than any other form of exercise.

In the late 1600s, Richard Baxter recommended, as lawful recreations, reading or conversation for those in physically active vocations, & walking for those in more sedate ones.

Good counsel never goes out of style.

The work I do is close enough to physical exercise after eight hours of hands-on physical labor(not to mention commuting by bicycle). I also make much use of the sauna and I enjoy swimming also.

Paul Forrest:

Agreed. God is advocating focusing on our spiritual development and personal walk, growing in Godliness, rather than becoming obsessed with our physical appearance.

Anonymous:

I know the history of Yoga and I don't practice the meditation at all. I engage in the physical movements, no mantras of any kind.

I am not a fanatic. I know that the Holy Spirit in me is stronger than any other force - worldly or spiritual.

Many of our prescription medicines are derived from natural elements that were utilized in Ayurvedic medicine and by others who practiced what we now call holistic medicine. Those individuals did not believe in or worship the Christian God, yet we still take prescription medicine when we need it.

The spirit of the serpent is not going to invade me spiritually because I utilize physical exercise and stretching movements a non-Christian devised. I practice Iyengar Hatha, some Vinyasa (flowing sequence) and some Kripalu yoga.

I do not worry or fear. He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world.

Laus Deo.

Cheryl,
have you reached that stage in Yoga where you have discovered that Everything is God ?

Flee from that system which is from the devil !

Do some homework, type in Yoga online, and find out the history and philosophy of it,and may the Lord help you to walk in ways of holiness dear sister.

We pray you will be deliverd from it !
Prove all things...and hold fast that which is good.

Yoga is the way to go. Exercise that tones, strengthens, increases flexibility, calms the nerves, relaxes the body and is enjoyable!

I HATE excercising. Thankfully, I'm able
to ride my bike to work (just 4-miles
each way). Otherwise I'd get very little
excercise if any.

My wife and I need to do more hiking.

I don't believe 1 Tim. 4: 8 has anything to do with keeping fit. Rather, it is speaking of religious exercises which, although not all bad, are in themselves worthless. We can learn this from the asceticism of the monks.

External religious exercise, then, is of little profit. Spiritual exercise, or true holiness, is what is needed in our souls.

I like to run "sprints." I call it sprinting. Though a lot slower than i used to be. I think jogging is bad; all that weight coming down on one knee, then all that weight down on the other knee, over and over again, i don't recommend it. (unless you're mad at your knees for something) I tried to jog and found that my body adapts, and soon i have to jog 20 million miles just to get winded.
