Right, those guys weren't concerned about the average southerner or the U.S. in general for that matter.
They were only concerned with lifting themselves and their fortunes. They pitted the average poor southerner (which was most of us) against each other both black and white (racial issues, socialist programs, etc) so that we would have this us against them mentality. Therefore the average man wouldn't pay any attention to what was going on with Washington, much less our own politicians.
We had much poverty and many desparate people down here for a very long time. Corruption flourished in a way that would make any mafioso New York or Chicago proud, which is another long tale of how we got to that point.
It's a dirty little secret here in the U.S. They say that we did it to ourselves, however the southland prior to the war was where all of the culture and money was in the U.S. before the Yankee government (specifically the Lincoln administration and the new radical Republican Party) came and did it to us.

A "Yankee" gov't expanded with no little help from Southern Democrats like Truman, LBJ, Carter, and Clinton.

I think it's about time that the christians in the Southern states took a stand against the anti-christian Yankie government.

We tried that about 150 years ago. We even went as far to form our own legal country. It took us over 100 years to actually rebuild from it completely and they made us pay for the war they waged against us which again, took around 100 years to pay off.

In the city I grew up in only 3 buildings still stood after the war of northern agression (2 houses and a bank that were used by both U.S. and C.S. troops as headquarters depending on who was in control).

I very well remember many people still living in small "shotgun" shacks when I was a boy, and that was only 25 years ago.

We in the southern states know the wrath of an angry Washington, we still however will thumb our noses at them when it's something we believe in.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't take a stand, but we must prepare ourselves and our families with prayer and fortitude for what comes after we take that stand.

Deo Vindice! Resurgam!

I say "Go Roy!" We are to obey the government appointed over us to a certain extent. What if our government does as was done in Roman times and makes it illegal to be a Christian? Will you still obey that government? I say if you know that you are Biblically or legally justified in disobeying that government, then so be it. What if the Waldenses or the first Protestants would have obeyed the law of the land, where would we be?? This nation was founded by Christians for Christians based on Christian laws and morals, I am proud of that fact. One nation under God (not allah, or budha or the pope or any other entity or anti-Christ). You go Roy! If it upsets a Muslim, so be it. I don't know if you still swear on the Bible and say "so help me God" in court or not. A country can be made up of Christians and have Christian leaders- our churches and pastors aren't making the laws elected officials are. The muslim and hindus that chose to be American citizens had to learn about the Declaration of Ind. and the Constitution and the Pledge before becoming citizens that would show anyone that this is a Country founded by Christians. If you are not ok with that then don't become a citizen. You can practice your religion, but this was meant to be/supposed to be a Christian country. God bless USA

I had heard Judge Moore say that the judge (Myron Thompson) who issued the order to remove the commandments had refused to interpret the word "religion" in the first ammendment, which Judge Moore believes supports his right to acknowledge that God's law is and should remain the cornerstone of our legal system. A judge's sworn duty is to interpret the laws and the constitution. Any judge who will not interpret the law, but instead makes their own law is operating outside his authority. I believe Judge Moore's refusal to obey the order was correct in the eyes of God, because the judge's order was outside his authority.

If you stop and think about it, no matter if you have been born again or not. What would it hurt anyone to go by the Commandments. People wouldn't steal, kill ect. It would be a much better world. GOD BLESS

And 1st of all, right now, I thank the LORD God Almighty because only He saved and redeemed my soul forever through my trust on His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ! And 2nd of all, may He bless Alabama's former Chief Justice Roy Moore for his bold and courageous stand for the LORD's Ten Commandments enough that he put them in a public place in that Judicial Building! In fact, it's not just about the Ten Commandments, religion, or even about Roy Moore. NO! Instead, it's about the LORD God Almighty of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) because He wrote and gave those Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites. (In fact, like it or not, Moses wrote them in your Bible.) And America would be a greater nation if we kept them everyday! So, yes, 1st, by the LORD's grace through faith, (not our works,) we have Salvation forever; and 2nd, we can't brag that it's the result of our efforts; Heaven forbid! But we must never forget that still, in His Son, Jesus Christ, the LORD God made us what we are to do good works which in advance He planned for us to live our lives and do! His Law can't make one good; it only shows us our sin. But it can point us to Jesus Christ! So, although Roy Moore is imperfect, still, I'm in prayer and support for him anyway! Thank you; and I wish you very well!

Impugning someone's motives is standard operating procedure in politics. But I say the 10 Commandments are best written on the hearts of judges inside the courthouse, not on stone monuments outside the courthouse. How many noble, glorious written statements are flouted in practice by men void of integrity - like, for example, our national Constitution! Monuments accomplish little - they're just externalism, show biz. Notice that the 10 Commandments were kept inside the Ark, inside the Holy Place, inside the Tabernacle.

This being said, to say that those supporting the "usus politicus" of the OT Law believe it is in any way a substitute for the working of the Spirit, is a strawman. The real question is, what should Christian legislators and judges do in the political sphere with their beliefs - sequester them, or endeavor to apply them? There is a spectrum of answers ranging from radical Pietism (Mennonites et al.) to Erastianism (the King rules the state church thru his bishops).

I had dinner with a judge here in the Atlanta area during the whole fracas over Roy Moore. From what he told me, Roy Moore's motives were wrong. He hopes one day to run for governor of Alabama. It is difficult to be elected unless people know your name (how many people, in Alabama or anywhere else, knew who he was before this). He was told to remove the monument and refused to do so. Since there is no violation of God's law to remove it, neither is it something we are commanded to do so he should have complied. NOT complying IS a violation of God's law as was stated by others in this thread. God will NOT honor Judge Moore's disobedience. Not only that but I recently heard a pastor who posts on this site state why he did not want the 10 commandments in public schools or anywhere else. The law was NOT given for salvation. It was given to show us our sin. Paul said in Romans 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. I for one also do not want the ten commandments posted in public places.

How encouraged I am to know that there
are some MEN in this world, real MEN.

Real MEN are few and rarely found in
the leadership of this world.

Judge Roy Moore made a stand for what
he believed in, and no doubt he knew
what he would have to face from a
godless, anti-christian liberal media,
and the public in general. He will be
rewarded in heaven some day for all he
has done that is right in God's sight.

I am happy that my grandchildren have
someone to whom they can look up to.

Judge Moore made a stand for our Lord
Jesus Christ Who is the WORD. The WORD
includes the Ten Commandments which are
God's Law. We must obey the laws of
our country, why not obey the laws of
God Who Is above and over all. He is
our Creator, blessed be His Name.

Judge Roy Moore deserves the Congressional Medal of Honour for
his willingness to sacrifice his job,
and his reputation (according to what
the world thinks of him), all for his
love for his God.

That is the God I want in my life too,
and it is men like Judge Moore that
inspire me........not the Benny Hins,
and phoney evangelists. God Bless Jud.
R.M.

Anon, I think you have stated the liberal myth thing several times. Unfortunately it isn't a liberal myth, but I am extremely glad you pointed out to those that did not know that seperation of church and state is not in the Constitution. It was written by Thomas Jefferson in the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. And you are right again that what the constitution speaks of is a seperation of government from any particular religion. I see your point, but my point is--I would have a difficult time walking into a courthouse that had up a sign that said One Nation Under Allah or something to that effect. And I don't want to read the Koran there. I'm also saying I do not need the 10 commandments to be posted in a courthouse to know that God is there because as a christian I know that wherever I am there God is also.

It kind of makes you wonder which commandment(s) any particular "separation of church and state) judge finds so offensive. Don't murder? Don't steal? Don't commit adultery?

Gee, maybe they are worried that if people kept them, there would be a lot less need for judges. They do love that power!

I agree with you 101% Mr. Barry. It's like what he's doing is lifestyle evangelism. But we all know that, that's not enough. We still need to open our mouth and proclaim the gospel to the unsaved people. And yes! I really recommend Ray Comfort to everyone on how he deals to the unsaved. He shows them the TC, which is the moral standard of God. It's like a mirror it reveals who we really are especially in the inside.

we should do ourselves a favor and omit the phrase 'separation of church and state' from our vocabularies - i think the way this phrase became so widespread was through so many unexamined repetitions of it in speech, so that we forgot that it has nothing whatever do do with law or the constitution

important to note too that the phrase 'separation of church and state' does not occur a single time in the constitution. I constantly hear people invoking separation of church and state as if it were constitutional - a liberal myth - sort of like if you tell a lie enough times, everyone will believe it, and now nobody knows that that phrase is a made-up credo for their interpretation of the establishment clause, which says (from memory, a near-exact quote) "congress shall make no law establishing any religion over another; nor shall it prohibit the free exercise thereof" - people (like...oh...say Judges) forget about that second clause of the sentence. and of course what the framers meant by religion was what we call denomination - this land wasn't to be a strictly baptist or presbyterian or catholic etc. land, but the presupposition was obviously that there was not to be a vacuum of christianity - much less a vacuum of religion totally - in the government.

First let me say that it is a refreshing change to see someone stand up for what they believe. Judge Moore is not ashamed to show who his GOD is! We have the freedom of religion and to express that, and just because he is a judge, does not mean he does not have the same rights under the Constitution! God bless you Judge Moore! May more authentic followers of JESUS stand up in this nation and the world! God bless America!

Hi, I'm writing from Australia so please bear with me. I think that Judge Moore's decision to place the Ten Commandments in the State Judicial Building was a brave thing to do, but what will it achieve? If his intention and motive was to make a public display of the TC in order to make others realise that America is a Christian nation, it may threaten or intimidate non-Christian groups like Muslims, for example. Sure, it will make them realise that this is a Christian nation they're living in, but I doubt that it will do much more than that. I think Judge Moore could do something more in conjunction with his display of the TC by reaching out to non-Christian groups. Explain to them that every person has lied, stolen, blasphemed God's name and lusted in their hearts. Help them realise that on the day of judgement God will judge everyone by the TC, and that they will be found guilty. "Law to the proud, grace to the humble." -Ray Comfort

I know I'm diverging from the main topic here, but yeah putting up a display of the TC may allow Judge Moore to make a point, but he could really do more than that if he went out and reached out to the masses of lost souls and used the TC to evangelise to them. It's always good to see men use God to benefit themselves isn't it? Judge Moore has vainly used the Ten Commandments to bring himself into the national spotlight. He should be ashamed and anyone who agrees with him should be ashamed. A total seperation of Church and State isn't possible or desirable, for example the words "Under God" in the pledge or "In God We Trust" on our money, but as a christian and an American I know that it would be wrong to put the Ten Commandments in government buildings. Jesus said it best when he said give to caesar what is caesar's and give to God what is God's. Our American nation is not just for protestants or christians in general and it is for all Americans. Christians will get their reward in Heaven, not now. Where is it written that government must sponsor religion? We have to do justly and love mercy and walk humbly here on Earth, not push our religion off onto others. Our works should move others toward God, not going against the Constitution and putting the Ten Commandments in government buildings.
