Thanks for that. I will have a read later.
Yes, I have particularly been influenced by that one booklet concerning evangelism. For evangelism to expect God's blessing, it must be done in accordance with his revealed will, as found in the Bible.
Basically, I see the regulative principle as making the Bible the sole authority in the church with regard to faith and practise. Most confessions include that statement, but very few churches pay any heed to it.

if you are interested in further reading malcom watts has a concise overview of exclusive psalmody on the articles page of his church website.
http://www.salisburyemmanuel.org.uk/index.html?/articles/
and as an ex hymn singer i can tell you it took me to hear preaching on the subject for several years before i came to reform my practice.
it is good however that you see the reg principle as going further than just psalm singing as alas many have confined it to just that subject.

I do thank you for your tolerant and well-mannered attitude when dealing with others who think differently.

I first came across this whole subject of the regulative principle in 2002 in a booklet called "Festal Days and the Law of God" by W H Molland. I had to read the whole thing through several times before I even began to see what the author was putting forward. Finally I saw that having any truck with Easter, Christmas, or any other festal day, was completely unbiblical and dishonouring to the Lord. It didn't change my position, because I've never celebrated these pagan festivals as a Christian, but it does make a difference now as to where I worship and serve God. Indeed I have much more to learn about all these matters.

granted, the phrase regulative principle does not occur in scripture, but neither does the word eschatology or trinity.
exclusive psalmody isn't as odd as it seems either. this was the practice of the presbyterian church in ireland until as recently as 100 years ago.

I wonder if the saints, angels and living creatures in heaven have heard of the regulative principle? As far as I can tell, they don't have exclusive psalmody there.

And when we get there, worshipping the Lamb of God, I quite expect the Lord will have us all united in purpose.

I also expect he will be introducing us to some new songs.

Walt,

The only thing 'warm and fuzzy' being presented here is your method of response to things that were not said.

Ex: I posted a hymn and commented on its beauty.

Your response: "If you don't like this method of worship because it does not allow you to use your drums, guitars and trumpets in what feels good, then be honest and tell everyone that everything goes to whatever feels good to them outside of the Psalter."

Where did that come from?

I responded with: "Actually, I've not heard "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" accompanied by drums, guitars, or trumpets, Walt."

Your reply: "Sorry, I do not understand. What is the problem is signing "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" using drums, guitars and trumpets?

Nice shift attempt, sorta.

You said: I find it funny that you would be upset for anyone trying to impose their own preferred "method of worship" on you when you should be open to anyone's method, without limits. Is that not what toleration for all sects and worship is about Mike?

Huh? You have a wonderful imagination, Walt. Funny, in view of the fact that you are the one upset.

I know you think your being subtle with your strawmen, but do you think it's working?

However, if your method of response makes you feel good, please continue.

now walt,
try to understand how difficult the regulative principle is for folk to grasp when they haven't encountered it before. i was born and raised a hymn singer, a chorus singer, a choir member... the list goes on. even in the middle of this, i believed there were limits to what was acceptable in public worship. i just hadn't ever worked out that those limits were scriptural. i sometimes was uncomfortable with "modern" hymns, as we worked ourselves into a frenzy singing "these are the days of elijah" (what is that about in light of hebrews 1v1), and with drama andpractices justified by expediency and not scripture. but it took years for me to question the longstanding innovation. be patient walt. these good things (like the regulative principle) are being rediscovered to the blessing of the church.

John/UK,

You said: "p.s. I'm a seven-days-a-week-worshipper."

May I say Amen to that?

Mike,

Sorry, I do not understand. What is the problem is signing "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" using drums, guitars and trumpets?

Hopefully you are not trying to restrict your church requirements upon any other. I would assume you would fully support that any man-made hymn should be allowed sung in any Sunday Christian worship, using whatever instruments the minister feels appropriate to his ear.

I find it funny that you would be upset for anyone trying to impose their own preferred "method of worship" on you when you should be open to anyone's method, without limits. Is that not what toleration for all sects and worship is about Mike?

John, thanks for your feedback as well on the topic. I always love those guys who claim they worship God all seven days (like those who go to mass each morning), and make no distinctions as to the Lord's Day Sabbath.

Whatever feels warm and fuzzy in your mind and heart is the litmus test, and to see some of the TV programs now where entire hard/heavy rock bands are playing in Church because it feels soooo good!

No regulation on worship...heaven's no, what a grevious sin that would be...rather it is toleration for all.

It's a great hymn, Mike. Full of good, uplifting doctrine, and a great encouragement to believers.

Such great rejoicing is ours in Christ the risen Lord. Death could not hold him, he burst the bands asunder. Hallelujah and Hallelujah! Jesus Christ is Lord!

p.s. I'm a seven-days-a-week-worshipper.

Actually, I've not heard "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today" accompanied by drums, guitars, or trumpets, Walt.

Would it not serve your "method of worship" better if you were less inclined to presume you know mine?

Mike,

That is certainly beautiful in the eyes and ears of man, but the true test is what is declared beautiful in the eyes and ears of Almighty God. It is He that requires our worship and it is His Psalter that has sufficient glorious psalms, hmyns and spiritual songs that has been ordained.

Outside the Lord's Day worship and praise, sing and play what makes your heart joyful, but on His day I would recommend we worship in Spirit and in ***Truth*** as He has ordained.

If you don't like this method of worship because it does not allow you to use your drums, guitars and trumpets in what feels good, then be honest and tell everyone that everything goes to whatever feels good to them outside of the Psalter.

Christ, the Lord, is ris'n today;
Hallelujah!
Sons of men and angels say
Hallelujah!
Raise your joys and triumphs high;
Hallelujah!
Sing, ye heav'ns, and earth reply:
Hallelujah!

Love's redeeming work is done;
Hallelujah!
Fought the fight, the battle won.
Hallelujah!
Death in vain forbids Him rise;
Hallelujah!
Christ hath opened Paradise.
Hallelujah!

Lives again our glorious King;
Hallelujah!
"Where, O death, is now thy sting?"
Hallelujah!
Once He died our souls to save:
Hallelujah!
Where's thy victory, O grave?
Hallelujah!

Soar we now where Christ hath led,
Hallelujah!
Foll'wing our exalted Head;
Hallelujah!
Made like Him, like Him we rise;
Hallelujah!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.
Hallelujah!

Beautiful... with or without musical accompaniment.

now that i see Jesus in them i wouldn't want to sing anything else, and how beautiful they are when sung heartily and without musical accompaniment. no need to worry about the doctrinal bent of the author either.

Then it is a "simple" task for the Divine hand.

All Glory to God. Amen.
