R.K., I agree with Cheryl and you.
I compare a Church to a school. In fact many of the old schools of yesterday were taught by the minister of Yahweh, or maybe his wife.
But today, I don't see that teaching aspect anymore. As I talk to people in my area, I can't believe how ignorant they are when it comes to Yahweh's Word. Now I'm talking about people that have been "Christians", for most of their life.
The "sermons" are white wash, as prophecied in Ezek. 13. All they teach anymore is a "feel good" sermon, not really stepping on toes. Or we have these TV ministers teaching a prosperity message, which carries over into the mega Churches.
As for me I don't need the Church system!
Kevin
Kevin,

I thought you were in agreeement and that your question to Cheryl was one of a rhetorical nature. Sorry that you feel about the Church system the way you do. I am afraid that God's people of late are hidden out in caves of 50. Sometimes it is difficult to find the cave hidden within the mountains.

It looks like whoever wrote this question
listed the answers in order from most
important to least important.

Education first with regulative worship
a very close second.

Kevin,

Cheryl is right. The sermon serves two purposes. It reveals the Word of God if the minister is faithful to the truth of the Word. It reveals the false prophet if the minister is not faithful to the truth of the Word of God. God teaches by positives and negatives (Joel Osteen by only positives or what he assumes are positives). Those who do not search the scriptures are "destroyed for lack of knowledge."

RIGHT ON!
Therefore, in order to define this "church" we must turn to scripture, do you agree?
Kevin
I agree. The Bible alone is the Word of God. It is God's textbook, and as such it is the church's responsiblity to educate in the truth.

Go ye therefore, and teach . . . Teaching them to observe all things . . .

In doing this the church has the promise "And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

Notice that this promise was given to the eleven disciples in Matt. 28:17 during a "worship service" in a mountain that "Jesus had appointed for them."

1Cor 11:19 "For there must be also heresies AMONG YOU, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you."
______________________________________________

Most important purpose......

Matt 16:16 "And Simon Peter answered and said, THOU ART THE CHRIST, the SON of the LIVING GOD.

Matt 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and UPON THIS ROCK I will build MY CHURCH; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

* The "rock" Jesus announces is verse 16.
(Not Peter as the Popish perversion insists, shifting it from Christ to man)

Also

1Peter 4:16 "Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
1Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Before I can give a honest answer, we must define what "church" means.
I look at all the different church denominations around, they all claim to tell the truth about Yahweh's Words.
I look right here on this forum, with the so-called Reform Church. And what I don't understand how we can have so many reformers of church history, and have so different views on doctrine, examples Calvin, Luther, Wesley, etc.
They all have different views pertaining to scripture.
What is really amazing is the fact that when we read the letters of Peter, James, John, Paul, Barnabas, Clement, Polycarp, Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, etc. they are all in one agrement.
Therefore we must define church!
Kevin
Kevin,

That is the problem. When every man is doing what is right in his own eyes, each will have a different definition of what church is and what church is right. As this survey unfolds the believe the opinions here will be far and wide. I suspect that there will be most where none of these answers fit what they believe to be the most important purpose of the church.

There can be no worship without truth. (John 4:23) Therefore, the primary purpose of the church is to educate in the truth before worship can even begin.
What good is place and atmosphere without truth?
