Two Resurrections (Note: This article is scheduled to appear in the March 31 edition of the Linn County News.)
“Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” (John 5:28-29 KJV) Easter is traditionally the time that Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. On that early morning 2000 years ago, the Lord rose from the grave and proved His victory over sin and death. As Christians we rejoice knowing that just as Christ arose, so one day we shall too. In fact everyone will rise from the grave, but not all will rise in victory as Christ did.
The Bible teaches that some will rise to a resurrection of eternal life, while others will rise to a resurrection of eternal judgment. (John 5:28-29) The difference will be what one does with Jesus Christ. Those who turn from their sin in repentance and commit their life to Jesus as Lord will look forward to eternal life. When this life on earth ends their souls will be with Jesus. Then one day their physical bodies will arise and will be joined with their souls in Heaven.
Others die and face eternal judgment because of their lack of faith in Christ. When they die their souls will go into eternal torment, and one day their physical bodies will arise to face judgment as well.
So where do you stand regarding Jesus Christ? Examine your life. Do you love Jesus? Are you following Him daily? Do you have a desire to obey Him? Do you have an increasing hatred of sin in your life? Do you have a desire to worship and fellowship with other Christians? These are marks of those who are true Christians. If these traits are missing from your life, then you’re likely on the road to eternal damnation. Repent! And humbly fall before the cross of Christ. Turn to Him and find forgiveness in this life, and find eternal joy in the life beyond. Or reject Him and face the eternal consequences that come to those who face a resurrection of judgment.
