We have come a long way since the ordination trial of William Craig in 1717 when he was denied his license because he gave an unsatisfactory answer to the question,"Must a person forsake his sins in order to come to Christ?" which issued later in the Marrow Controversy. Still the questions here were answered, as would be expected, from a graduate of the Master's Seminary, though I wondered if the receiving of Jon may not too much appear like it was already a foregone conclusion. I would only have asked Jon to be sure to read Richard Baxter's "The Reformed Pastor" (1656) one time through on his knees before accepting this charge. Then when asked his goal as a pastor he could answer like Baxter, "to let in irresistible light to their consciences, to keep it there, and drive all home; to screw the truth into their minds, and work Christ into their affections ; to meet every objection, and clearly to resolve it; to drive sinners to a stand,and make them see that there is no hope of their escaping destruction except they be converted."
