In my reading this morning I came to similar conclusions concerning verses 14-16. Here's my notes:
‘But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, if, instead, you reject My statutes, and if your soul abhors My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant, I, in turn, will do this to you:
I will appoint over you a sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the soul to pine away; also, you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up.
— Leviticus 26:14-16
"sudden terror": one word, repeated twice -- behalah = dismay, sudden terror or ruin, alarm
"consumption": shachepheth = a wasting disease of the lungs
"fever": qaddachath = fever
"waste away": one word, repeated twice --
kalah = to waste away, be exhausted, fail
"pine away": one word, repeated twice -- duwb = to pine away (mope; sorrow), pass away
The sudden terror is a wasting disease of the lungs that brings fever, and will have the effect of making the people mope and feel sorrowful in their exhaustion.
There's a lot more going on in Leviticus 26 that may correspond to Revelation 6's first four seals. But the issue is that it's no |
