We are rapidly approaching the end of the doctrinal part of this letter. As we enter chapter 10, I would remind you once again that this chapter presents three closing arguments, each based on a passage of Scripture, summarizing the case for the superiority of Christ. The first argument is based on Ps 40 and shows that God prepared a body for His King because sacrifices were not His will. The second argument is based on Ps 110 and shows that sacrifices are no longer necessary; Christ's priestly work is complete because He is waiting for His enemies to be placed under His feet by the Father. And the third is based on Jer 31 and shows that sins are gone, and therefore that there is no further need for Levitical-priestly work. So as we look at this second of the three closing arguments this morning, I want to show you that the Levitical system has passed away because of the once-for-all nature of Christ's sacrifice and victory, as seen through the paradigm of Ps 110.
