Melchizedek is a mysterious figure. He appears for a short time in Genesis 14, where he is said to have greeted Abraham with hospitality and blessed him. But the writer of Hebrews' language in chapter 7 describes Melchizedek as being the king of righteousness, king of Salem (peace), without parentage, genealogy, beginning, or end of days, which has caused some to speculate if his appearance was a theophany.
However, the writer says that Melchizedek was not the Son of God, but was "made like" Him. While Melchizedek certainly was like Christ in various ways, the writer was merely trying to show how Christ's high priesthood was prefigured in Melchizedek in that His priesthood was not contingent on genealogy as was the priesthood of Aaron.
