Abraham is considered in the Jewish faith to be the greatest figure. However, the writer of Hebrews describes Melchizedek as being "superior" to the father of faith. This was true for two reasons. First, this was because Abraham knew of Melchizedek's innate worth and so rendered to him tithes from his conquest.
Second, Melchizedek was superior because he in turn blessed Abraham, a conference of God's blessing an action only rendered by one who had the God-given authority to do so.
