In 2 Samuel 7:1-13 God promises king David that his kingdom would be an everlasting kingdom and that the kingdom would never be torn from his descendants as the kingdom was torn from Saul.
The only way David's kingdom can be everlasting is if one in the line of David is an everlasting king. This is precisely God's plan. Jesus would be born of the house and linage of David to be the everlasting king of David's line. Thus, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, He was truly born, "King of the Jews."
This also means that God himself will preserve David's line.
About 740 BC, the king of Israel and the king of Syria formed a league to go up to conquer Ahaz, king of Judah. God intervenes and offers Ahaz any sign so that Ahaz would know that God would be faithful to his promise to protect the line of David. When Ahaz answers that he will not ask for a sing, God says, "Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel."
In Isaiah 9, we learn about the child that would be born. He will be called Wonderful Counselor, mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The child will be a light in the darkness. The child will be life to those who walk in the shadow of death. The child will be born a baby, but he will be a king in the line of David. The child will destroy the power of the devil by destroying the power of sin.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
