After being struck unable to speak by the angel Gabriel for 9 plus months, Zechariah was given his voice back when he confirmed the Babies name was John as given by Gabriel.
Verse 67: Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying
Verse 68: God visited and redeemed his people.
Visited is a key word. When God "visits" his people, it is not a casual visit. It means God is coming down to personally rescue His people. Thus, God "visited: His people in the Exodus to save His people from slavery.
With the coming of Jesus, God "visited" His people to ultimately save them from slavery to sin and death.
The second key word in Zechariah's prophecy is "redeemed." While "redeemed" can mean simply to buy back, in Scripture, "redeem" takes on the meaning of buy back out of destruction. Thus, "redeem" is the counter part of "visited."
In verse 68 God raised up a horn of salvation. This refers to the horns of the altar on which the priests sprinkled blood for redemption. Thus, the horn of salvation indicates the absolute justice that God applies to all people.
However, because, by God's tender mercy, all the sins of His people were cast on Christ to be completely forgiven, when God applies justice in judgement, His people are completely acquitted.
This actual acquittal leads to eternal peace with God.
To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
