This is a sermon for rich people. Most of you are saying to yourself, “Great! They really need to be preached to!” So, my first order of business is to convince you that you are rich. I know that is not easy because we tend to measure our circumstances by cultural definitions of wealth and riches. Next to Mark Zuckerberg’s $Billions, all of our bank accounts look pretty impoverished. Do you feel rich, yet? In the global scheme of things, most of us are actually very rich while very often feeling economically deprived! Money can be a great blessing and a means of accomplishing tremendous and lasting good. But it can also be a terrible curse and a means of spiritually destroying your soul. That is why Paul makes a special point to add this post script to his letter to Timothy. He instructs him to command rich Christians to be very careful with their wealth. Why? Because he is interested in their money? NO. Because he is interested in their spiritual welfare.
